The 1967 U.S. Special Mint Set is a distinctive five-coin collector set issued during the final year of the U.S. Mint’s three-year suspension of traditional Proof and Uncirculated Mint Sets. It contains the Lincoln Memorial Cent, Jefferson Nickel, Roosevelt Dime, Washington Quarter, and Kennedy Half Dollar, with the dime and quarter struck in copper-nickel clad composition and the Kennedy Half Dollar containing 40% silver. Special Mint Set coins received more careful preparation and handling than ordinary circulation strikes, often displaying sharp details, smooth satin-like surfaces, and varying degrees of reflective or cameo appearance, although they were not produced to full Proof standards. The coins were sealed in a rigid plastic holder and presented in official U.S. Mint packaging. With a production of 1,863,344 sets, the 1967 Special Mint Set is the lowest-mintage issue of the 1965–1967 series and remains popular for its silver half dollar, unusual finish, and transitional place in U.S. coinage history.
