1965 SMS Set Unopened Envelope 40% Silver Kennedy US Special Mint 5 Coins
The 1965 U.S. Special Mint Set is a historically important five-coin collection produced during a nationwide coin shortage, when the U.S. Mint temporarily suspended traditional Proof and Uncirculated Mint Sets. Struck at the San Francisco Assay Office, the set contains the Lincoln Memorial Cent, Jefferson Nickel, Roosevelt Dime, Washington Quarter, and Kennedy Half Dollar. The dime and quarter were produced in the newly introduced copper-nickel clad composition, while the Kennedy Half Dollar was struck in 40% silver, marking a major transition away from the 90% silver coinage of 1964. Special Mint Set coins received greater care than ordinary circulation strikes and often display stronger details and smoother, more reflective surfaces, although they were not made to full Proof standards. The coins were sealed in a rigid plastic holder and packaged inside an official U.S. Mint box. With a production of 2,360,000 sets, the 1965 Special Mint Set remains popular for its transitional compositions, unusual finish, silver half dollar, and important place in U.S. Mint history.
